On December 17, 1940, in Aiken County, South Carolina, the late Elmore Brown Sr. and Artee Quattlebaum Brown gave birth to a special angel named Ruth. She departed her life peacefully at home on Friday morning, August 16, 2024, at her residence in Wagener, SC.
Ruth attended A. L. Corbett School in Wagener, South Carolina. She was employed at Talley Corbitt Logging Company, Springfield, SC, for several years, and then she moved to Columbia and worked at Sears Department Store. During the later years, she was a caregiver for the Hinson family.
Ruth was baptized at an early age and joined Smyrna Missionary Baptist Church. She loved to spread the word of God through singing and praising the Lord wherever she went. As the years progressed, she attended Progress Holiness Church in Columbia, SC; Zion Hopewell Baptist in Gilbert, SC; and Kingdom Training Center in Salley, SC. She later rededicated herself to her home church, Smyrna Missionary Baptist Church.
Ruth was married to the late Buist Johnson Sr. and their union, four children were born. Several of her siblings who preceded her in death include two brothers, Harry T. Brown and Elmore Brown, and two sisters, Carolyn B. Scarborough and Deborah B. Brown.
She leaves to cherish her loving memories two sons, McKinney O. (Mietakeuch) Brown of Columbia, SC, and Buist Tillman (Swanzetta) Johnson Jr., of Williston, SC; two daughters, Gwendolyn (Yurith) Johnson-Dickson, of Columbia, SC, and Deborah (Robert) Johnson-Smith, of the home Wagener, SC; one brother, Roland (Rosa Mae) Brown; one sister, Artistine (Spurgeon) Simmions; two brothers-in-law, Minister James Brown Saluda, SC, and Earl Clark, of Springfield, SC; two sisters-in-law, Syblean Johnson, of North, SC, and Zelma Clark, of Brooklyn, NY; thirteen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives, and friends.
