Renee Hicks Obituary

Renee Hicks, aged 86, passed away peacefully at her home in Columbia, SC on December 16, 2023. In the final days and hours of her life she was surrounded by her children and grandchildren, while she shared stories of her childhood.

Renee was born on March 17, 1937, in Breslau, Germany. She was the youngest of 3 siblings. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Walter Paul Goebel and Charlotte Marshall Goebel, and sisters, Anelise Goebel and Ingeburg Kopp.

Renee was a survivor of World War II. She married Billy Wetherington, an American US Army soldier, in Nuremberg, Germany in 1957. Renee birthed four children, all of whom are living. Renee was a member of the VFW Club in Columbia. She loved music and listening to her grandson play guitar and sing. She loved her family dearly and looked forward to spending summers with them in Myrtle Beach. She was witty, funny, and beautiful. Renee’s German accent and her sense of humor would put a smile on anyone’s face. She was the matriarch of her family and a person whom everyone loved and respected.  She was a great cook, The Cheesecake Queen”.

Following a devastating diagnosis, Renee fought hard to stay alive and strong. She gave it her very all. Her family would like her to be remembered as a warrior.
