Dr. Christos Sarafidis died in his home peacefully on August 27, 2024, as he finished the race God set before him. He was born on March 4, 1936, in Athens, Greece, to the late Dimitrios and Evyenia Sarafidis. Christos was a man of depth who knew something about most subjects and loved to solve the problems of the world in conversation. He moved to Austria in 1953 at 17 to study Chemistry and then to Braunschweig, Germany, to continue his graduate studies. He met his beloved wife Tina of 62 years in Germany. They married in 1962 and went to Boston, MA, for a fellowship at MIT. He accepted a position at the Experimental Station in Wilmington, Delaware, at DuPont, where he finished his career as a research chemist in plastics and elastomers. And in his latter years, he moved to South Carolina to be closer to his children and grandchildren. He was known for his bright mind, his love of music, cars, technology, and watching sports, and his enjoyment of God’s creation.
Christos loved his family deeply and is survived by his wife, Christine (Hager) Sarafidis, his elder daughter Eugenia (Jenny) Sarafidis Walsh (John) and their children Margarita Smith (Cory), Joseph, Gabriela, and Benjamin; and his younger daughter Rebecca Sarafidis Gradler (Geoffrey) and their children Natalie and Georgia, as well as his sisters Rita Kaltsas and Efi Sigalou, their families, and many cousins in Athens, Greece.
A service will be held on Friday, August 30th, at Columbia Presbyterian Church at 10 o'clock, with visitation following in the church hall.
A private family burial will be held in the afternoon at Greenhaven Memorial Gardens in Elgin, SC.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation to Young Life Northeast that will be used to reach high school students with the gospel in the schools right where Christos was living.
